Air21 hands Purefoods the pink slip

29 Dec 2008

Gary David scored 20 points and Wynne Arboleda had 17 and 6 assists as the Air21 Express makes Cyrus Baguio's Air21 debut a sweet one with a 94-82 win over the frustrated Purefoods TJ Giants in the 2008-2009 KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

“When I was watching the two contenders, nakita ko ‘yung firepower ng San Miguel,” Air21 mentor Bo Perasol said. “Magkakaroon kami ng mismatch sa bigs nila, but sa wings makaka-matchup kami very well.”

“Pero it’s the same, if we can have the same intensity on defense, magkakaroon kami ng kumpiyansa sa opensa naming,” he added.

Arwind Santos who had 13 points and 11 rebounds, played great defense on Purefoods' Kerby Raymundo all night, not giving him any rhythm at all. Marvin Cruz had 11 points for Air21. Baguio struggled in this game, making only 6 points with 5 turnovers in 20 minutes.

The win sets up a January 4 meeting against the San Miguel Beermen, who won earlier in the evening against the Cca-Cola Tigers. The Express have lost both games against the Beermen so far this season.

An altercation between Purefoods’ James Yap and assistant coach Koy Banal occurred with seven minutes left in the fourth with Air21 up, 80-62, allegedly on defensive lapses by the Giants.James Yap led the Giants with 26 points. The win set the Beermen to another knocj=kout match against the winner of the second game between the Purefoods TJ Giants and the Air21 Express.“

This is somehow the path God allowed us to be in,” said SMB coach Siot Tanquingcen, whose powerhouse team was a pre-tournament favorite but wound up in the wildcard after finishing the eliminations at sixth.

“We just have to make sure we do our best, put in all our efforts dahil ang results darating yun,” he added. “We just have to play with the talent we have and let the chips fall as they may.”

“Against Purefoods you have to deal with James (Yap), Kerby (Raymundo), Rico (Villanueva). Sa Air21 naman, you have to deal with everybody, including ‘yung dalawang bago nila (Cyrus Baguio and Celino Cruz),” he pointed out.Danny Seigle, in his second game back after a long layoff due to various injuries, contributed 16 points and 7 rebounds in just 21 minutes. Air21 Express nets Cyrus Baguio

26 Dec 2008

After weeks of speculation, the Cyrus Baguio trade is now official. Baguio, who was rumored to be going to the Brgy. Ginebra Kings, was officially shipped by Red Bull, along with tough guard Celino Cruz to the Air21 Express in exchange for Air21's first round picks in 2011 and 2012.

Air21 team manager Lito Alvaez confirmed the reports after his team lost to the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters last night.

It’s really great to add players like Cyrus (Baguio) and Celino (Cruz) who can help us in our campaign not only here in this conference but also for our future,” said Alvarez. “We traded Ranidel for Don Allado then we got Cyrus. I’m sure we are in a right direction.”

At the end of the eliminations, here are the averages of the two players.

Cyrus Baguio: 18 games, 30.0788OPE (18th in the league), 13.44ppg, 3.67rpg and 3.11apg. He is shooting 44.5% from the field and 77.6% from the line.

Celino Cruz: 17 games, 20.6116OPE, 6.94ppg, 3.65rpg, 2.59apg, 34.9% 3PT

The move toughened Air21's backcourt and increased their chances of getting past the wildcard phase. They will play Purefoods on Sunday.Baguio is expected to join in Air21’s practice today at the Xavier Gym and set to play for Sunday. Cruz, on the other hand, will skip the practice and set to join the next day of scrimmages due to family reason, according to Alvarez.

"We -- the players and the coaching staff-- have absolutely zero discussions about the magic number we need," Cone said. "Once you do that …look forward a little bit … you lose your focus on the immediate."

PACESETTING ACES TAKE ON DANGEROUS TIGERS

Ginebra meets Air21 in another crucial tiff
Thursday, 04 December 2008
Alaska and Coca-Cola both return from a long rest clashing with each other Friday in a crucial rematch in the 2008-09 KFC PBA Philippine Cup elimination phase at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Aces and the Tigers are wary of one another in the contest preceding an equally important match pitting the Barangay Ginebra Kings and the Air21 Express.

“We expect Coke to play with a little desperation, making them very dangerous,” said Alaska coach Tim Cone of the Tigers aching to make a push entering the homestretch of the elims.

The 5 p.m. contest marks the first time Cone will be engaged in a battle of wits with his former player Kenneth Duremdes.

The Aces topped the Tigers, 69-62, in their previous tiff when Coca-Cola was still under coach Binky Favis. Now, the Tigers are under Duremdes, who is familiar with Cone’s schemes, having played for Alaska from 1997 up to 2002.

“I like our chances although we have a tough job to do. We have to contain Willie Miller and establish our inside game,” said Duremdes.

Cone and his troops are aching for redemption after suffering an 80-92 defeat to Sta. Lucia last Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo. The Realtors pulled through despite a career-low output of two points from main man Kelly Williams.

Alaska, nonetheless, has stayed two games clear of San Miguel as the Beermen fell in defeat to the Talk n Text Tropang Texters, 80-85, in their showdown in Singapore Sunday. The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters drew level with the Beermen Wednesday on their 80-79 squeaker over the Realtors.

With a 9-4 win-loss record, the Aces are two games away of a guaranteed slot in the Magic Five. Being the front-runners, the Aces naturally are looking to land at no less than the top, though.

Duremdes said their immediate goal is to get on track, having been very inconsistent in their games in the tourney.

The Tigers are four games off the pace at 5-8.

Jockeying for position in the middle of the pack are Barangay Ginebra at 7-6 and Air21 at 6-7.

“We’re just hoping to win as many games as we could while awaiting the return of our injured players (Jayjay Helterbrand and Mark Caguioa). What’s good is that everybody’s contributing in their own little way,” said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.

The Kings gained a share of fourth place with the Phone Pals Wednesday as they stretched their streak to four games on an 83-76 walloping of Red Bull.

The Express, on the other hand, have moved down in the lower half of the chart following back-to-back losses to the Beermen and the Purefoods TJ Giants.

“We just want to get back to winning again. We need to take to heart the ‘whatever it takes’ mentality,” said Air21 coach Bo Perasol. (NC)

RAIN OR SHINE TRIPS STA. LUCIA

Elasto Painters remain in hunt for F4 spot
Wednesday, 03 December 2008
Rain or Shine is now a heartbeat away of a first-ever stint in the post-elims play.

Solomon Mercado and Rob Wainwright sank a charity each then Rain or Shine put up a good defense in the closing seconds as the Elasto Painters scored an 80-79 nail-biter over the Sta. Lucia Realtors Wednesday assuring the Asian Coating franchise of at least a playoff for a wildcard round slot in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup.

"It's all about hard work. It's paying off for us," said Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia as they got back at the Realtors to gain a share of second place with the San Miguel Beermen on their identical 8-6 win-loss card.

"We'd never been in this position before. Now that we're here, (finishing in the top two) is one target we're looking at now," Garcia also said.

A win over Purefoods Saturday guarantees Rain or Shine of at least a .500 closing mark and a slot in the wildcard round -- feats the Elasto Painters have never achieved in team history.

The Realtors failed to convert a basket in the last 26 seconds, sliding three rungs down to joint sixth place with the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants at 7-7.

Going for naught was Kelly Williams' 31-point explosion -- his best in the season after a career-low of two points in their last game against Alaska Milk.

The Realtors had a chance to salvage the game but Paolo Mendoza missed two three-point attempts in the waning seconds.

Sta. Lucia pushed Rain or Shine to the limit as the Realtors rallied from a 30-43 halftime deficit largely behind the exploits of Williams and Norman Gonzales.

After a long chase, the Realtors gained the upperhand at 64-63 on a 9-0 roll capped by a layup by Williams with a little over two minutes into the final canto.

The two teams engaged in a fierce battle from there on until the Realtors had their last taste of the lead at 79-78 on a triple by Williams with time down to 50 seconds.

Mercado and Wainwright split their pairs of charities inside the next 24 seconds as Rain or Shine surged ahead at 80-79.

After a timeout, Sta. Lucia went to Mendoza who missed a shot from right quartercourt.

The Realtors kept possession but the Elasto Painters stood their ground defensively to the finish, thus, avenging an 85-88 loss to Sta. Lucia in their previous tiff.

"I think we're lucky in the end that's why we pulled through. But it was a good lesson for us specially for me as a coach," said Garcia. (NC)

RESILIENT KINGS MOVE UP TO UPPER HALF OF STANDINGS

Tubid-led Ginebra beats Red Bulls for fourth straight win
Wednesday, 03 December 2008

The Barangay Ginebra Kings notched their fourth consecutive victory but had to fend off a fiery comeback by the Red Bull Barakos down the stretch to salvage an 83-76 decision Wednesday night in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Ronald Tubid tallied 15 points and 11 rebounds to show the way for the Kings, who built a 17-point lead late in the third quarter but almost blew it away when they went through an offensive meltdown in a span of seven minutes bridging the third and fourth quarters.

"We're just getting lucky. I hope we could sustain our effort," said Barangay Ginebra coach Jong Uichico during the post-game interview.

Uichico admitted they are struggling particularly on the offensive side with Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand out with injuries.

"But their teammates are doing their best to man the fort in their absence. Hopefully, our collective effort will bring good luck," he said.

With their seventh win in 13 games overall, the Kings took another significant step in their bid to clinch an outright playoff spot, pulling abreast with Rain or Shine, Sta. Lucia and Talk ‘N Text at third to sixth places.

Sunday Salvacion also turned in 15 points, Junthy Valenzuela added 12 and Paul Artadi had 10 and six assist for the Kings, who sealed the win with a closing 10-0 run. Valenzuela and Tubid capped that decisive spurt with back-to-back 3-point shots.

The two teams shot awfully in the first half that saw the count tied on three occasions and the lead changed hands seven times. Ginebra led 43-36 at halftime.

The Kings scored the first nine points of the third quarter and went to build the game’s biggest lead at 17 points twice (62-45 and 64-47) before their shooting went sour.

The Barakos saw an opportunity and they capitalized on it by outscoring the Kings, 23-9, and pulled within 70-72 on two free throws by Cyrus Baguio.

But as they did the past few games, the Barakos couldn’t finish and once again came up short.

Baguio tallied 16 points on 5-of-19 shooting and Leo Najorda added 11 for Red Bull, which dropped its seventh consecutive game – the longest losing spell for the franchise since joining the league in 2000. Overall, the Barakos are 3-10 and in danger of not advancing past the eliminations. (DBC)

The scores:

Barangay Ginebra 83 - Tubid 15, Salvacion 15, Valenzuela 12, Artadi 10, Menk 8, Escalona 6, Cabatu 5, Wilson 5, Crisano 4, Reavis 2, Mamaril 1.

Red Bull 76 - Baguio 16, Najorda 11, Holper 9, Hubalde 8, Rodriguez 7, Sharma 6, Cruz 5, Chan 4, Ybanez 3, Hrabak 3, Duncil 2, Espinas 2.

Quarterscores: 23-22, 43-36, 66-52, 83-76.

The Air21 Express were there to observe a Barangay Ginebra occasion but won't yield the night altogether.

Sonny Cabatu, Pido Jarencio, JV Gayoso and Mike Advani showed up to be with Gonzalgo. Ironically, these proud former Ginebra players only became witnesses to a carnage of the Kings.
